Parties to beat or bring the heat!

Hot, hot, and more hot. August temperatures are on the rise all over the country but especially
in the south. Many cities will see temperatures in the triple digits for days on end. The best
remedy is to stay in, stay cool, and stay still, right? Of course not! The best remedy for the heat
is to gather friends and family and make a few plans. All that is left is to answer the question:
do you want to BEAT THE HEAT or BRING THE HEAT?

Here are a few ideas how you and your guests can plan a get-together and BEAT THE HEAT:

The Pool Party
A true classic. Whether it’s the neighborhood or backyard pool, a quick dip in the pool on the
hottest days always satisfies. Add in a great menu and your guests will feel refreshed no matter
how high the temperatures. One suggestion is a cold menu: fresh fruits, gazpacho, cucumber
salads, anti-pastas, ice cream, and sherbets, just to name a few of the more popular options.
An all seafood or sushi menu is also a great choice. The goal is to give guests cool treats to eat
and a place to cool off in between bites!

A Movie and a Theme
Hollywood knows we are looking to get out of the heat of the summer and into an
air-conditioned theatre. The variety of movies released between May and September means
that there is a movie for all tastes. How about inviting your guests to a movie followed by a
theme gathering? For example. Downtown Abbey: A New Era sends the Crawford family to the
south of France. Following a showing of the film treat your guests to some of southern France’s
best-known dishes: Soupe au Pistou, Socca, Salade Nicoise, and finish off with a slice of Gateau
des Rois – give your guests bonus points if they choose to dress in authentic fashions of 1928.
Or, for those of more primate tastes, host a Jurassic World: Dominion party. Following the film,
the menu can offer a variety of dishes to satisfy the Herbivores and Carnivores among you. Still
not convinced? Well, what about the grandaddy theme party of them all: Elvis. You can
choose to go a traditional route and serve the King’s favorite foods such as meatloaf, mashed
potatoes, and the now legendary peanut butter, banana, and bacon sandwich. But if there is a
betrothed couple among your group, stage your own Elvis themed wedding reception dinner
complete with wedding cake for dessert!

Hot Pursuits
As long as you and your guests do not have serious underlying medical conditions and everyone
remains consistent in hydrating, summer days can still be a great time to be out of doors with
your guests before or after your party. The pandemic gave us the phrase “staycation.” Research
the unique attractions of your city and plan a local tour. Too many of us never actually visit the
cities we live in. Now’s the time. Along with local attractions, think about adding in walking,
hiking, or bike trails. For those who live near lakes and rivers, swimming, boating, and tubing
parties remain popular options. Lastly, amusement parks. Amusement parks offer
indoor/outdoor activities, and water rides when temperatures really soar. Again, a reminder to
stay hydrated, use caution and follow heat advisories.

Hot Foods
Ancient Chinese medical wisdom counsels that when you feel hot you should eat spicy food.
The theory, not entirely faulty, is that eating spicy food will cause the body to sweat and
sweating is the body’s primary mechanism for cooling itself. For those hardy souls who can
stand it, think about planning a party with the hottest cuisine around. Many of us already
appreciate Mexican and Tex-Mex, but what about planning a meal around Andhra cuisine? The
Indian state of Andhra, in the south of the country, is one of the leading producers of red chili,
an ingredient sure to bring the heat. Or try South Korean recipes which feature Kimchi and chili
paste. But, overall, many foodies consider the cuisine of Thailand to be the spiciest/hottest in
the world. If you are feeling truly adventurous, look to the south of Thailand for Gaeng Tai Pla.
This dish features chilies, turmeric and kaffir leaves to create a curry that is salty and VERY spicy.
For a real “Bring the Heat” Party to remember, consider bringing in local specialty catering or
food trucks to serve your guests. Guests can sample a variety of options cooked by
professionals!

Nine88 Events can help with planning any of these options or a combination of options. Long
hot summer days are no reason to stay indoors and miss out on all the fun. Contact Nine88
